We have to blame - oops, we mean credit - Isabel Cisterna of Neruda Arts. Isabel is the Director of Neruda, a 25-year-old organization that is well known for its cultural programming in Waterloo Region. Neruda exists to build community capacity and to open up opportunities for international performers and artists new to Canada. Anyhow, Isabel came up with this idea for a tiny collective and, in thinking about how we'd be a group of 'assorted' artists, she shortened that word down to 'ass'. And since the 'ass' keeps making us all giggle, we could not resist charging forward. It needs to also be mentioned that our actual gallery is VERY Tiny Ass in size (but adorable). While our collective operates quite independently in terms of work, we are very much under the impressive umbrella of Neruda Arts..
We currently have 12 artists in our collective.
We are a structured and working group of artists. This means that we believe that having some procedures and efficiencies in our gallery operations and strategy offer the best possibilities for success. All artists who are in our collective are expected to contribute through working gallery hours, working on a committee, or both. All artists pay the same commission from their sales which then goes to the gallery for various necessary expenses (gallery displays/signage, advertising and more). Our commission percentage is very reasonable and has been determined based upon the input of our participating artists.
The Tiny Ass Art Gallery steering committee is responsible for reviewing new artist applications. The factors we will consider when reviewing new artist applications include: a) do we have room in our collective at this time?, b) does the applying artist offer a new medium or very different approach to a currently represented medium? c) is the interested artist able to provide artwork in at least one of the scales of miniature and tiny?, d) does the artist create art versus craft? e) is the artist able to contribute effort (beyond art making) as a working collective member?
